Hiking Trails & Scenic Destinations on Salt Spring Island

Salt Spring Island is a haven for outdoor lovers—and there’s no better way to explore its natural beauty than by hitting the trails. Whether you’re looking for a gentle walk through old-growth forest, a panoramic mountaintop view, or a coastal trek along the ocean’s edge, the island has something for every level of hiker.

Here are some of my favourite local trails and natural spots to explore—whether you’re visiting for the weekend or getting to know the island as a potential new home.

Mount Maxwell (Baynes Peak)

One of the most iconic viewpoints on the island, Mount Maxwell offers sweeping vistas across Burgoyne Bay, Vancouver Island, and the surrounding Gulf Islands. You can drive up most of the way to the top and enjoy short walks along the ridge, or hike the more challenging Armand Way Trail from the valley floor for a rewarding climb. Please note: if you are driving up to Mount Maxwell the road is rough and may not be suitable for non-4×4 vehicles.

Ruckle Provincial Park

This is a must-visit. Located at the island’s southeast tip, Ruckle Park features forested trails, open meadows, and rocky shorelines perfect for picnics, tide pooling, or spotting seals and otters. It’s one of the most scenic coastal hikes in the Southern Gulf Islands.

Mount Erskine

Known for its whimsical fairy doors tucked into trees along the trail, Mount Erskine is a magical place to hike. The trail winds through mossy forest to a series of rocky lookouts with views over Ganges Harbour and beyond. The route is moderately steep but well worth the climb.

Chris Hatfield Trail

A newer trail with ties to Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield, this one is part of a growing network of island hiking routes. It’s peaceful, forested, and a great spot for birdwatching and quiet reflection.

Bader’s Beach & Quarry Trail

A quieter, lesser-known walk, this trail leads through forested hills down to a secluded shoreline. Ideal for those looking to get off the beaten path and enjoy a peaceful picnic by the water.

Duck Creek Park

If you’re looking for something easy and family-friendly, Duck Creek is a lovely flat trail with a small stream, wooden bridges, and lots of shade. Great for a casual stroll or a relaxed walk with dogs.

Duthie Gallery Trail & Fernwood Loop

For a mix of nature and culture, combine a visit to the Duthie Gallery’s outdoor sculpture park with a walk through the peaceful Fernwood area. It’s a lovely afternoon outing, especially in spring or early fall.

Why Hiking Matters on Salt Spring

These trails aren’t just for recreation—they’re part of what makes island living so special. On Salt Spring, it’s easy to feel grounded in the rhythms of nature. The trails connect communities, support wellness, and offer space to slow down and reflect. For many people thinking about moving here, the natural beauty and access to the outdoors are key reasons to make the leap.
